Generative AI security is the practice of identifying, assessing, and managing the risks that emerge when generative AI tools—large language models, AI assistants, image generators, code assistants, and increasingly autonomous AI agents—are used within an organization.

The field has emerged quickly and is still maturing. Generative AI adoption moved faster than most security teams could respond: employees began using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot, and Google Gemini for work tasks before organizations had a chance to evaluate them, establish policy, or configure appropriate controls.

What makes generative AI security distinct is where the risk lives. With traditional software, the primary security concern is network-level access, authentication, and vulnerabilities in the software itself. With generative AI tools, much of the risk is in the data employees choose to share through prompts—and those data transfers are largely invisible to conventional security controls.

Generative AI introduces several distinct risk categories that organizations need to address:

Data exposure through prompts. When an employee pastes a customer contract, a financial model, or internal strategy documentation into an AI assistant, that content may be logged, retained, or used in model training depending on the tool and its settings. Many employees don't think of this as a data transfer—they think of it as using a tool. From a compliance and data governance perspective, the distinction doesn't matter.

Shadow AI adoption. Generative AI tools are easy to access, free or low-cost for individuals, and genuinely productivity-enhancing. All of these factors drive rapid unsanctioned adoption. Most organizations have far more AI tools in use across their workforce than IT is aware of—and the gap widens every month.

Agentic capabilities. AI tools are increasingly moving beyond text generation into autonomous action: reading and writing files, sending emails, querying databases, browsing the web. As these capabilities expand, the access pathways created by AI tool adoption become more significant and more difficult to govern through acceptable use policies alone.

Third-party and embedded AI. Generative AI capabilities are now embedded in applications organizations already use—CRM platforms, productivity suites, development tools. Security teams need to assess not just standalone AI tools but the AI features now present in sanctioned SaaS applications.

Effective generative AI security starts with visibility: a comprehensive inventory of every AI tool in use across the organization, including shadow AI, tools accessed from personal accounts, and AI capabilities embedded in existing SaaS applications.

From there, risk assessment requires understanding what data categories are flowing through each tool, what the vendor's data handling and retention policies are, and what agentic permissions, if any, those tools hold.

Controls can then be applied proportionally—not as blanket blocks that drive users to less visible workarounds, but as governance mechanisms that allow AI productivity while managing exposure: approved tool lists, acceptable use policies with specific guidance on data categories, enterprise-licensed versions with appropriate data controls, and ongoing monitoring.
